Disability Rights California Releases New Advocacy Platform

Disability Rights California (DRC) adopted a new Advocacy Platform to meet our mission and vision and demonstrate our commitment to disability justice through bold, progressive advocacy that pushes society toward more inclusion, equality, equity, and full participation for all people.

Currently, Californians are struggling to adapt to the numerous challenges brought on by the pandemic, economic downturn, and racial injustice that is disproportionately harming individuals with disabilities and their families. DRC’s new Advocacy Platform addresses our commitment to populations experiencing multiple barriers to equality while advocating and engaging with these communities, with and for them in new ways. Some of the areas we will address include:

  • Unsafe, segregated, institutional care for older adults and disabled people;
  • High rates of unemployment and underemployment among people with disabilities;
  • Long standing inequities in healthcare, mental health services, housing and education for disabled people, especially those who are part of Black, Latino, Native American, Asian Pacific Islander, immigrant, and LGBTQIA2S+  communities;
  • Government programs and private businesses that discriminate against disabled people and refuse to ensure physical and communication accessibility for all;
  • A lack of affordable, accessible, healthy, and stable housing that is integrated into all communities;
  • An underpaid direct support workforce, a digital divide, and a growing wealth gap; and
  • Structural problems in our healthcare, housing, and justice systems that have led to disproportionate harm to California’s Black, Latino, Native American, and Asian Pacific Islander communities.

Moving forward in this moment, DRC will be proactive to ensure our advocacy seeks out and responds to the voices of all people of color with disabilities, members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community with disabilities, and hold ourselves accountable for progressive advocacy.
