California Memorial Project 16th Annual Ceremony of Remembrance

On September 17, 2018 there will be events throughout the state of California to honor those who died unrecognized at state hospitals and developmental centers.

More than 45,000 people, including individuals with psychiatric or developmental disabilities, died while living at a California state hospital and developmental center between the 1880’s and 1960’s. Many were buried anonymously in unmarked or mass graves and did not receive recognition or acknowledgment in life or in death.

Each year we gather on the third Monday in September to honor and show respect to these individuals by holding Remembrance Day Ceremonies at state institutions and sites where individuals are buried. Programs for many of the ceremonies include music, artwork, speakers and personal testimonials. All are welcome to attend.
