About the webinar:

“Understanding the Role of a Representative Payee" is a training designed for individuals or organizations appointed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to manage Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits on behalf of someone who cannot manage their own finances. This session will cover the responsibilities, application process, and best practices for managing benefits in the beneficiary’s best interest. 

What you will learn:

  • What is a Representative Payee.
  • Understanding the role and why it’s necessary.
  • Managing funds to meet the beneficiary’s basic needs (e.g., housing, food, medical care).
  • Saving or investing any remaining funds appropriately.
  • Record Keeping: How to track and report expenses accurately.
  • Money Management Skills: Best practices for budgeting and using benefits responsibly,
  • Compliance and Oversight: Understanding SSA requirements and how to stay in good standing.
Reasonable Accommodations: American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be offered

Ariana Pablo is a Compliance Reviewer based in the Los Angeles office for the OPRABA (Office of Payee Review and Beneficiary Assistance) unit at Disability Rights California. She has been a Compliance Reviewer for 6 years and has worked in the disability community for almost 10 years.

Raymond Kwong (he, him, his) works at Disability Rights California (DRC) as an Advocate with the Advocacy and Community Engagement (ACE) team. He joined DRC 9 years ago as a Multicultural Affairs Advocate. He works with attorneys to facilitate trainings, legal clinics, and outreach to the disabled community.
