Senior Clients' Rights Advocate

“If you saw 10-year-old me, I knew I was going to be a lawyer.”

How long have you worked with DRC?

Since 2004. I took 1 year off and came back, and I’ve been here ever since.

What do you do in your current role?

I am a Senior Clients' Rights Advocate. My office provides free legal advocacy for consumers of the Regional Center of the East Bay. I help consumers with a variety of problems from special education, regional center services, to public benefit programs. People call with a variety of legal problems and if it's something that we can help with, we do. If it's something that's outside the scope of what we do, family, law or non-disability related law, for example, we would give them a referral list to other attorneys or agencies.

What is the most recent show/movie/book you've watched or read?

The new Star Wars show Ahsoka. I’m a Star Wars fan, I like it. I’m a general movie fan, so I catch different movies that come out. I like horror, sci fi, and fantasy. I subscribe to the AMC Stubs A-list so I can see three movies a week. I made a point to see Oppenheimer in 70-millimeter IMAX. I take things like that into account, so it’s not just going to the movies, but I care about the format of the movie, the theatre, how comfortable the seats are, is it IMAX versus Dolby Atmos. Things like that I care about and notice.

What is something unique about DRC that you haven’t experienced at a previous job?

I like the flexibility—the ability to have a good work life balance.

If you could tell your 13-year-old self one thing, what would it be?

Things I did wrong, the mistakes I made I learned from today because I’ve made those mistakes. If I didn’t make those mistakes who knows where I’d be.

Fun Fact

I studied German in high school and college, so I used to be able to speak German, but I can’t really anymore. I knew in high school I was going to go to law school, so I wanted to study Latin for legal reasons, but it wasn’t offered as an option.

What is an accomplishment that shaped or impacted your career?

Passing the bar exam. I also got a scholarship for college that definitely had an impact. That’s definitely one of those things where, where would I be but for that.

Do you have a “motto”? If so, what is it?

Always try to do the right thing. Part of why I do what I do is to try to make the world a better place, you can choose to do good or choose to do bad. A lot of people choose to do bad, and I’ve always tried to do good. I have no idea where that comes from, that’s just me, who I am. It goes back to if you saw 10-year-old me, I knew I was going to be a lawyer. That springs from seeing the world from a child’s perspective and seeing the unfairness of the world particularly as it relates to how children were treated. Which is why when I was in elementary school, I said I'm going go to law school and be a lawyer and come back and represent children and fix these kinds of things. Children have no one to speak on their behalf.

How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t working?

I’m pretty much a couch potato. I go to conventions for different shows. I have a pretty good autograph collection from movies and shows I enjoy and I have like some full size theatrical movie posters. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars was one of the nicest people you’d ever meet.
