Each year, the U.S. observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central & South America.

National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the culture and contributions of both Latinx and Hispanic Americans. The history and accomplishments of these groups in the shaping of the country are celebrated as well as their immeasurable contributions to our economy, culture, and society.

Beginning as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Johnson in 1968, it was expanded to a month-long observance by President Regan in 1988, when it was enacted into law.

These dates were chosen because there are many holidays and celebrations in several Latin American countries during this time, including Independence days and Día de la Raza. This year’s theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is: “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” This theme invites us to celebrate Latinx and Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, and will continue to make in the future. It is also a reminder that we are stronger together.

Disability Rights California (DRC) has partnered with Latinx leaders throughout the state to share with you their stories of Esperanza and encouragement.  Below, find resources available to help you through your journey.
