Informing the Community about SB 258

Recently, Disability Rights California (DRC) hosted a virtual town hall to bring the community together and learn about one of the bad bills currently making its way through the legislature, Senate Bill 258, and its terrible implications for Californians. DRC is in total opposition to SB 258 and the other bad bills on mental health and public safety that are currently in process.

Our panel discussed and outlined what’s wrong with this bill, why it needs to be opposed, and the action steps to stop the bill. At the heart of SB 258 is the issue of consent for people with disabilities. The panel also had a broader conversation around legal capacity and consent for people with disabilities, especially for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

SB 258 (Wahab)

SB 258 is a bill that will criminalize consensual sexual relationships between disabled people, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
