Disability Rights California Supporting Daniel Achieve his Superhero Dreams

Daniel's Success Story
Daniel’s individualized program plan (IPP) meeting was approaching when he called Disability Rights California for support and information to extend applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, and receive additional services to peruse his goals.

Daniel is currently a consumer of South-Central Los Angeles Regional Center (SCLARC) where he receives applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy and community integration services through his individualized program plan (IPP). He is a 21-year-old adult with Autism with a life goal to become an artist, and create an animated Batman television series for adults. He loves comic books, especially superheroes, and looks up to Bruce Timm, an artist best known for his character designs for the DC Comics animated franchise.

At the IPP meeting, Daniel was an excellent self-advocate and his ABA therapists were also present as part of Daniel’s circle of support. He shared his personal goals, objectives, interests and requested services to help him achieve those goals. He explained specific ideas on what he wanted to achieve in the future, becoming an artist like Bruce Timm, creating an animated Batman television series, and becoming more independent.

Disability Rights California helped Daniel secure 90 days of regional center vendorization of ABA therapy.

In addition, as a result of Daniel’s self-advocacy, the regional center agreed to assist Daniel in applying for the Department of Rehabilitation services to advance his career goals of becoming an artist, and enrolling in a graphic design or art program. In addition, they would also authorize Independent Living Skills services for driver’s education, reading, writing, other living skills, and refer Daniel to multiple graphic design classes.

Steps for the future

Daniel is very excited about taking next steps to chase his dreams. He is visiting classes and working with SCLARC to secure funding to attend.

Daniel’s ABA team says, “Daniel is a vibrant and evolving young adult who embraces all challenges. This 21-year-old animator in the making, is the product of his rich Mexican heritage, encompassing the following traits and values: family support, respect, honor, tradition, resilience, and empowerment.”

Disability Rights California is honored to celebrate Daniel’s achievements and encouraged by his motivation and self-advocacy.
