Disability Rights California Statement in Response to Recent Hate Crimes in Buffalo, New York

Disability Rights California (DRC) condemns the mass shooting that took place on May 14th, 2022, in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, killing ten Black individuals and wounding another three, one Black person and two white individuals.  The person who committed this crime has admitted to being a proponent of white supremacy and intentionally chose the location because of the high percentage of Black individuals who live there.

President Biden called for an investigation into the racist hate crime and said, “Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”  We also appreciate the President's words, “In America, evil will not win — I promise you.  Hate will not prevail.  And white supremacy will not have the last word.”

DRC condemns white supremacy and stands in solidarity with the families and victims of this shooting, and countless other Black individuals who have been killed due to racism.

As an organization we are committed to and will continue to fight for equality, civil rights, and justice for all.  We stand with our staff, community partners, and members of marginalized communities facing a surge in hate crimes, including Black, Latinx, Native American, Asian Pacific Islander, immigrant, LGBTQIA+ communities, and people with disabilities within these groups facing increased racism, discrimination, and intensified hatred.
