Disability Rights California Condemns Supreme Court Decision Overturning Roe v. Wade

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court announced its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning 49 years of reproductive freedom, putting the rights and lives of millions of people at grave risk.

Disability Rights California condemns this decision as equal access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, and all people should have the right to make informed decisions about their own bodies.  This retrograde decision also negatively and disproportionately harms people who already face structural barriers to care, including people with disabilities, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, immigrants, people living in poverty, young people, and those without the means to travel.

As a legal organization, we recognize the heavy consequences of removing constitutional rights that people have relied on for almost half a century: such a drastic departure from our legal principles now leaves other civil rights and landmark advances vulnerable.

As an organization, we stay committed to advocating for accessible healthcare and will continue to fight for equality, civil rights, and justice. Legal wins of civil rights were not won in isolation, and they will not be lost in isolation. We will stand for those rights wherever they are threatened.
