💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 26.7% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 20% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 30% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 23.3% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The LBPD arrested a 57-year-old Sacramento woman on Friday evening “on suspicion of driving under the influence.” She crashed her vehicle “into the garage of Fire Station 2 at around 6:39 p.m. in the 1600 block of E. Third Street.” In the process, officers learned that she “was also responsible for a hit-and-run traffic collision earlier in the day that occurred a mile away near Bluff Park.” (LB Post)
  2. It is official! Councilwoman Mary Zendejas won her seat outright for district one (CD1) with 50.25% of the votes; the same goes for CD7 Councilman Roberto Uranga with 57.86%. According to Friday’s final registrar update, Kristina Duggan and Kailee Caruso will go on for a runoff in CD3. CD5 will see a runoff between Megan Kerr and Ian Patton. In CD9, Joni Ricks-Oddie was close to reaching the majority vote but fell slightly short. Ricks-Oddie will now have a runoff against Ginny Gonzales. (Press-Telegram)
  3. The City released the results of its 2022 homeless count on Friday. “Long Beach identified 3,296 people experiencing homelessness on February 24.” Counters noted that the number of those living on the street increased by 22% while the number of people living in cars went up by 380%. Interim housing participants went up by 123%. Twenty-two percent of those counted were living outside the City or County before experiencing homelessness. (City of LB)
  4. LB Water released its annual water report on Friday. At this time, 65% of the water we’re drinking comes from groundwater. The other 35% consists of “purchased, imported surface water.” Testing for “radioactive, biological, inorganic, volatile organic or synthetic organic contaminants” shows that all are “under the maximum contaminant level.” (LB Water)
  5. Are you paying more for the privilege of receiving a paper bill? Our East LB neighbor learned last month that Frontier is now charging $2.99 for sending a paper bill, which translates to “$3.15 a month with surtaxes added.” Lengthy phone calls reveal that customer service representatives “are told not to delete it” when customers complain. And, if your neighbors don’t have computer access, they have no choice but to pay the fee. (Beachcomber)
