Deaka McClain said she lives her life “with the mindset of making a difference and being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves”. She was born with cerebral palsy and weighed just a pound-and-a-half. Doctors were not sure if she would live. Deaka has made it her mission to tell her story – including one about how her advocacy work began when she was a junior college student.

She had a reasonable accommodation. One of her classes was located upstairs. Instead of fixing the elevator so Deaka could make it to class, the school simply moved the class downstairs. “I appreciated it, but believed the school missed the bigger picture of having a working elevator for her and anyone else who needed it so we could go to classes like everyone else.

Deaka serves on a number of boards and commissions. She is the chair of the Citizens Advisory Commission on Disabilities. In this role, she advises the mayor of Long Beach and city council about issues concerning citizens with disabilities. She advocates for clients as a co-chair of the Harbor Regional Center Client Advisory committee and is on the executive committee for the LA Care Health Plan.

May of 2016, Deaka received her Master Degree in Public Administration and two graduate certificates in urban Executive Management and Employer-Employee Relations and Personnel Management from California State University Long Beach. She also has an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Los Angeles harbor College and a B.S in Journalism from Cal State Long Beach.
