Disability Rights California honors Assembly Member Tony Thurmond

Thurmond champions rights of people with disabilities

(Sacramento, CA – June 13, 2016) The Disability Rights California’s (DRC) Board of Directors honored Assembly Member Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) with the “Legislative Achievement” award at its June board meeting.

Thurmond chairs the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #1 on Health and Human Services. “As chair he worked diligently to advance the rights and protect services for people with developmental disabilities,” said DRC board member Judy Mark, in presenting the award. “Due to his leadership nearly 300,000 people with developmental disabilities received an additional $418 million dollars to help them live in the community.”

“I am honored to receive this award. In my position as chair of the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, I see firsthand the struggles of people with disabilities,” Thurmond said. “As a legislator I believe it is my job to make sure all Californians, especially those with developmental disabilities, are able to fully participate in all that this state has to offer. We’ve come a long way together. But there is much work to be done.”

Assembly Member Thurmond also worked to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to businesses and other public places. This year he collaborated with DRC on AB 2873, a bill that would increase the number of existing local building inspectors who are Certified Access Specialists (CASp). The bill would also increase funds for training and certification.

Last year Thurmond worked with DRC to defeat SB 251, which would have made it easier for 98 percent of California businesses to delay fixing access problems.
