Federal Appeals Court to Hear Case on IHSS Cuts
Seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers gather outside courtroom to illustrate what's at stake
SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday while arguments are heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Oster v. Wagner, more than 100 seniors, people with disabilities and their caregivers will gather outside the courthouse to show their support for cost-effective home care and display large photos demonstrating what is at stake if the previous court ruling is overturned. Among those attending and addressing the crowd will be in-home caregiver and ULTCW member Wendy Ko and her 89-year-old mother to whom she provides daily care.
The state's appeal was filed in response to Federal Judge Wilken's ruling to halt the 2009 home care cuts that would place at risk the vital care that over 120,000 low-income California seniors and people with disabilities rely on to remain safely at home.
In addition to wanting to overturn Judge Wilken's ruling, the state is also proposing cuts for the 2010/11 fiscal year that would wipe out half of California's cost-effective home care program.
